Congratulations on completing your 6-week challenge. This year’s weather forced us to find creative ways to get our steps in, but you all did not disappoint. If anything, this weather was one example of the everyday challenges we face to stay active. When you do come across those challenges be kind and patient with yourself, and know trying your best will always be enough.
Three tips to carry with you as you continue on your journey.
1. Take it day by day: Some days you are more active than others, and that’s OK. It is so important to find balance in your life. Embrace and respect that there will be days that you are too busy or exhausted to squeeze in more activity. Instead of focusing on what you didn’t accomplish, or think you should do, listen to what your body is telling you it needs. If you’re itching to take a long walk or a yoga class, do it. The same thing goes when your body is calling for a day on the couch watching bad TV.
2. Find the joy: Movement should never be something you dread, or used as punishment for eating a “bad” food, or taking a day off from exercise. Forcing yourself through a workout is not sustainable and most likely the routine will die faster than it began. Instead try new activities, new instructors, new friends in fitness to figure out what builds you up and makes you feel good.
3. Never give up: There will be weeks where you put you exercise routine on the back burner, but don’t use that as an excuse to give up entirely. Instead, pick up where you left off, or try and fit in 10 min intervals throughout the day. After all, something is always better than nothing.
Testimonials
Here are a few of the highlights that were shared with us.
– J.G. Walk this Way
“Thank you so much for putting this together. It has brought out a fierce determination to get up earlier and out further, and, ironically, a true appreciation for stillness.”
– L.S. Cisco Disco
“Walk the Rock reintroduced me to the joys of walking. My daily goal moving forward is to put down the cell phone, take out the ear buds and traverse the diverse landscapes of our Island with gratitude for it’s beautiful vistas, sounds and smells. I’m honored to have led a team of strong women who value their emotional and physical wellbeing while balancing the demands of work and family.”
– L.S. Fish Out of Water
“During this challenge I started to walk to and from work 3 to 4 times a week, which is 3.5 miles. I really enjoy the walk which cleared my head and helped in reducing stress. I am sleeping better and just feel so much better. I will keep it up even after the challenge.”

The Prize
We are so very grateful that The Yoga Room has donated 2 class passes to each member of the winning team. In addition to the yoga passes, each team member will receive a 1-hour Nutrition Consultation at MiniNutrition.
If you have yet to take a class at The Yoga Room, I couldn’t be more of an advocate. My experience with yoga has provided me with so much more than a good stretch. It has taught me how to respect my body and fitness ability for what it is, and ultimately led me to a more active life. The Yoga Room is such a supportive space with a wonderful staff of knowledgable instructors. It is an ideal space to try your first yoga class or pickup where you left of.
To all WTR participants
Your journey toward health does not need to end here. Receive 10% off any nutrition consultation or package with MiniNutrition from now until July 14th.
Meet Michel
A few of you have been emailing with Michel over the past six weeks, and I wanted to take a moment to introduce him to those of you who have yet to meet him.
Originally from the Netherlands, Michel moved to Nantucket about three years ago. Being from a country that uses self propelled transportation as much as possible, he is a huge advocate for walking and biking for both exercise, and transportation. In an effort to inspire this community to take advantage of our many bike paths and miles of open space he created a walking challenge for his colleagues during his first year on island. The challenge was such a success that it became obvious that invitation to participate be extended to the community as a whole. The next year we joined forces to create Walk the Rock.
To say I could not have organized this walk without him would be an understatement. If you see Michel out walking or running around the island send him a thank you wave.
The winning team is…
Congratulations to “Walk the Way” – Janet Giles, Andrea Maher, Shannon Caires, and Hope Consilvio
